--------- Seeking Nuclear Understanding
--------------------------------------
-- To all of the
Nuclear Experts out there - - -
Please help me to understand some
things about nuclear power plants,
especially the ones now in
trouble in Japan.
What little that I thought that I knew
came from a visit to the
SanOnofre facility down the coast from
here near SanClemente before it went
into operation way back in
the 1960s.
As I recall the fuel can be transported relatively
safely to the
plant and does not become a part of any reaction
until it is
assembled with other components in the power
plant.
Q. If that is true, then in case of trouble, why can't they
simply
separate the active components to the state in which they
were prior to assembly?
As I recall there are some sort of
absorption rods that are supposed
to be able to be dropped via
gravity into the reactor area to
function as a neutralizing
component to essentially stop the reactor
from creating
energy.
Q. If that is true, then why didn't that happen with these
reactors
rather than their suffering the overheating, excessive
pressure, and
explosions???
My thinking is that the
fail-safe mode in the case of the loss of all
power, should be to
STOP generating energy by having the absorption
rods simply
falling/dropping into place in case of an emergency -- in
which
case there would be no run-away heating and potential for
melt-down
and contamination, but that seems to not be what's happening.
As
for electrically pumping in cooling water in case of accidents, why
not just have some old-fashioned water towers on site such that
opening the valves on the bottom would allow the water to drain out
by gravity into the needed spots?
After all, gravity is cheap,
readily available, and seldom malfunctions.
What am I missing
here???
Any/all expert views
appreciated..

Many
years ago I recall hearing that some scientists were hypothesizing
that low frequency sound energy at specific levels of intensity could
drive a normal/rational person somewhat insane and cause irrational
behavior. Others then offered an extension of this to explain the
disappearance of people from their otherwise-in-tact ships at sea
(esp. in the Bermuda Triangle area), by suggesting that the wind
whistling through the superstructure created such sounds - thus
causing the sailors to become disoriented and to jump into the sea.
It's doubtful that I dreamt both of these. Would appreciate anyone's
commenting on their having heard of either of such cause-effect
relationships and any references to any documentation on the
subjects. Possibly the Taos-Hum is somehow related, but I really
sorta doubt it.
Remember the Roadrunner Cartoon?? Well, watch,
smile, and laugh!!!
This is the first one done with computer

FINALLY!! This is really Great. It's been FAR
too long since we last saw one.
Only 3 minutes, but it's 3 minutes
of fun!
Enjoy!!

Hello, Everyone:
This system will be OFF THE AIR from Fri 27
May through Tues 14 June inclusive.
Your cooperation would be
appreciated in ...
A. NOT sending any messages, except small
ones of the GREATEST importance.
B. understanding that any
messages which you might send could ...
1. be
rejected by my ISP if the allotted space fills-up.
2. be lost among the spam - as I perhaps carelessly delete such
messages on my return.
3. cause some more
important messages to suffer one the fates mentioned
above.
Meanwhile, please understand that any lack of a reply does
not indicate a lack of interest on my part.
Thanks for your
cooperation.

After
listening to several sources about health in relation to other
factors, I am beginning to conclude that they are right in stating
that STRESS can be a VERY LARGE factor in maintaining good health. At
my age, I'm beginning to understand that I do not handle stress well,
that I do not handle adversity well, and similarly (as the saying
goes) do not suffer fools gladly. If only I had learned how to cope
with these areas in my early years, then my health might be better
these days. Don't know if it's too late to learn now, but to the more
youthful who may read this, I would hardily suggest that you find a
way and give it your all as soon as possible.

As
you might prepare to leave your own records for posterity, consider
that --
The ancient -glyphs survived for millennia and could be
clearly read.
The ancient DeadSea Scrolls survived for centuries
and could be clearly read.
Early photos and negatives (both still
and movie) survived for decades and could be seen.
Edison drum
recordings survived for decades and could be heard.
Copying each
of the above resulted in loss of quality and in the earliest of times
it was very labor intensive.
Modern media like memory,
floppy-discs, CD/DVDs can be copied effortlessly with NO LOSS of
quality, but whether or not there will still be any way to retrieve
the information will depend on the survival of the technology to
process the items. Perhaps no one will know how to process compressed
-.JPEG files on a DVD in the year 2511. Think about these aspects as
you select a medium and instructions for your historic records passed
on to the next generation.
Recommendation: Use high quality
DVD-R's with instructions to copy them every year to the then-best
media available in the industry.

The USA is just under 1/2 as old as the discovery of the Western
Hemisphere.
I lived almost 1/3 the life of the USA; your fraction
will be different. Just think what's been accomplished in these times
as compared to the millennia before. Then think of what the future
may bring and of what the cultural anthropologists of 3011 will write
about our time on the planet and what became of it in the meantime.
Remembering the rise and fall of other civilizations, be sure to do

have any new dark-ages in tomorrow's history books (if they still

A
few days ago I got a message apparently from a friend on AOL, but it
looked suspiciously as though the sender's system was infected with
some MalWare. When I tried to forward the message back to the sender
to ask if it was an intentional send, then AOL rejected it with a
message indicating that AOL did not like some of the content.
Accordingly I made minor modifications to one of the URLs in the text
and sent back it again. This time AOL accepted it. Apparently AOL
audits the incoming mail for questionable URLs but does NOT audit the
outgoing mail for the same sort of content.

POTENTIAL FOR E-MAIL ADDRESS CHANGE - -
-
Special offers are often too good to pass up, and therefore I
may be changing my Internet Service Provider (ISP) sometime in the
future.
I may actually be taking my own advice that I've been
offering many others for a long time, as at ...
http://www.popcornpot.com/hughspen/emailing.htm#addrchg
In
order not to have any synchronizing problems whenever I might decide
to make a change, please begin to send mail to me at ...
hugh360@gmail.com
It is good NOW
and will survive any such change that I may make.
If and when I
ever do make a change, then I will just switch that address to be
forwarded to my new ISP address. It's a simple switch and will avoid
problems for the long term future.
Meanwhile, until any switch
might be made, please do not be confused by my outgoing E-Mails'
appearing to come from my current account at ...
hthoskins@earthlink.net

Q.
Who is it that wanted change for a hern?
Thinking about
changing InterNet Service Providers?
Worried about notifying all
of your E-Mail contacts about the change?
Concerned about missing
some people who may get their e-mails to you rejected?
Anxious
about everyone's managing the change over the same weekend???
Are
these things troubling you, Bunky? (apologies to Spike
Jones)
Then get an E-Mail account RIGHT NOW at GMAIL.COM and never
worry about any of these things in the future, because you can manage
it any (or all) of 3 ways: download it via POP3, forward it to any
other E-Mail address (e.g., your old ISP then switch it to your new
ISP), manage it via a browser from ANY PLACE IN THE WORLD.
If you
do finally later change ISPs, then you have complete and ultimate
control and do NOT need to tell anybody to change your address in
their addr-book.

Some ANCIENT documents are now available online, and you can

As
for other ancient stuff find more following . . .
The Library of
Congress has an ORIGINAL Gutenberg Bible printed in Germany in the
middle 1450's. Have see it and the one at the British Library. It was
printed with moveable type in the Latin language with the standard
roman alphabet, but the type font from that era has made it VERY hard
(for me at least) to decipher the letters -- much less even
read/pronounce the words.
The L.O.C. allowed theirs to be
digitally photographed, and it is now available for a price on a set
of 2-CDs -- along with a cross-linked English translation.

Recently I used a site that
displayed dots for each digit, so verifying the my typing was

Today an e-retailer's customer service site refused to
accept a message from me because it contained a 16-digit number which
they were afraid might be a c/c number. Their rejection message
suggested that I add dashes, which would then be in the middle of

It continually amazes me that 42 years after we

color of the wiring used in the switch rooms to differentiate the

For
years I've been stumbling over the backspace key on PC keyboards: I
keep hitting the back\\slash by mistake. Finally it dawned on me to
check some history of ergonomics, and sure enough - on the IBM 3270
terminals that I used for years up until the last time in 1998, the
backspace is twice as wide and included the location now used for the
back\\slash on a PC. Old habits are hard to break. See more at ...

Speaking of those buckets: on Sat 17 Dec, Wyoming hosted Temple
in a good football game. As I was watching the 11th play of their
drive, on 4th and 3 at the 21, Wyoming passed for a T-D; they only
needed 3, but took the risk and made the 21. The subsequent P.A.T.
hit BOTH uprights and went over the bar for an EXCITING extra point,
but they still lost, as see

Whatever your religious beliefs/leanings, the awesome views
of the art and the keen technology that makes it possible is well
worth the time spent viewing
MICHELANGELO'S MASTERPIECE ---
Follow
the directions for fantastic views; you can move the scene just at
though you were there yourself; move in any direction; rotate to it's
right-side-up, and
especially the +, zoom in,
icon.
Here is an amazing bit of technology that you would
never see in person, and you would NEVER be alone in the room. It is
ALWAYS VERY CROWDED and of course you can't see Michelangelo's
artwork close up as you can here. This is especially spectacular if
you have a large high-definition screen! Too detailed to appreciate
on an I-Phone.
TO VIEW EVERY PART OF THE MICHELANGELO'S
MASTERPIECE,
JUST CLICK AND DRAG YOUR ARROW IN THE DIRECTION YOU
WISH TO SEE.
In the lower left, click on the plus (+)
to move
closer,
on the minus (-) to move away.
Choir is thrown in free.
AMAZING! MOVE THE ARROW AND YOU WILL
SEE EVERY PART OF THE CHAPEL.
This virtual tour of the Sistine
Chapel is incredible. Apparently done by Villanova at the request of
the Vatican.
Thought you would enjoy the quality and a bit of Rome
on your computer.
Amazing what can be done with technology.
