The current state of
computer system diagnostic error messages is such that there may be 4
legitimate reasons for a user to get the same error message, and each
time that that message is given, then there may have been any of 13
actual stimulating causes. In a recent experience, I got a message
box stating "Authorization Required" by a WebSite and blank
fields provided to fill-in an I.D. and password. This happened for
EVERY attempt to access ANY WebSite. The actual cause was that the
iPad being used was connected to a range extender that was extending
the range of a wireless router that was not broadcasting; no
communication ever got to the modem, much less to the WebSite
identified in the message box as requiring "Authorization".
All a user really knows when an error message is given, is that there
is an error of some kind somewhere in the system; the wording may
totally belie the actual cause.

New
word for the New Year- - -
HELP- Vividly recall from an early 1960s performance at the
Hollywood Bowl with a spotlight on a vacant piano, that the orchestra
played a piece from the score of a then-recent movie, which score had
been written by a famous composer who had died just before the movie
was released. Believe that the movie was filmed in wide-screen
Todd/AO, but not sure. Sorta thought maybe it was done by one of the
Bernsteins, but they both died much later.
Would appreciate
any help recalling the movie or the composer.

The
street maps from AAA are wonderful for using while on the road; they
are in HIGH contrast, in very few colors, and can be read easily
while driving. They can even be copied on Black & White printers
and are still very useful.
ALL of the online map sources of which
I am aware yield products which are quite useless while driving. They
dwell in pastel colors and the streets are all in outline format
rather than in single line format. They are cute for online
reference, but printing them in Black & White renders them
useless as driving references.
Would appreciate any leads to
AAA-style online maps that can be printed B&W and be more useful
while driving.

this new initiative from New York's Metropolitan Museum of

Every week, two episodes lasting two minutes each are
released, each of
which examines a single work of art through the
eyes of a curator at the
museum. There are also further resources
which allow you to interact
with the work in different ways - for
example, exploring X-ray imaging
of a Greek bronze statue. It's
beautifully designed and produced, and
really showcases how
digital media can illuminate cultural artifacts in

Downey History Buffs:
The Downey Historical Society
recently interviewed me on tape for my Remembrances of Downey. One of
the things that I mentioned was listening to the nightly KFI
broadcasts of the Fruit-Frost-Service in Pomona, given by Floyd
Young, with Roy Rogers as an occasional substitute (NO; not THAT Roy
Rogers). Afterward I researched some of that stuff and discovered the

Which
lead me to several other "discoveries" ...
KFI
stood for "Farmers Information";
it was owned by Earl C. Anthony the long-time
L.A. Packard car dealer.
who
also owned KECA.
KHJ had been touted as standing for
"Kaiser, Henry J."
and also for "Kindness, Happiness, and
Joy";
ACTUALLY
they were random letters selected by the U.S.Commerce Dept.

The
equals sign, was invented in 1557 by Robert Recorde (ca. 1512ヨ1558

two things can be more equal".
Someone of similar stature and
renown, in the same era, made the observation that any problem or
situation could be analyzed much better if numerical values were
assigned to its properties, i.e. if it could be expressed in
numbers.

Most
news broadcasts have "teaser" pieces just before the breaks
to get you to listen to the commercials. Some broadcasts leave the
teased item to the very last, and even then it usually is not worth
the wait. Barnum said that "there's fool born every minute".
Some eloquent pitchmen can talk for a LONG time and say nothing, but
