These are archived copies of the Periodic E-Mails
entitled "Compendium of Stuff".
Rather than
re-distribute ever piece of goodies that comes my way which would
take a lot of time and space on the Net and possibly bore some, now I
try to find each of them out there someplace on the giant WEB and
include their URLs in these monthy messages so everyone can select
those specific ones which sound like they might be of interest.
My
apologies for the links' no-longer being hot (you'll need to copy &
paste) and for the need to scroll to the right for any UN-folded

It
uses LEDs for the light and thus should be rather economical on the
batteries.
Would recommend NOT using rechargeable batteries,
as they will likely decay during non-use more so than from being in
use.
More and more gadgets are using batteries for
power.
There is even talk of new schemes for sending power
wirelessly, e.g., for lamps in the middle of a table.
This has
been discussed for years; it's been called "broadcast power",
as see ..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcast_power
but
it always consumed more power at the receiving station than it
delivered over the "air". With all of the hype (some of
which may have merit) about living near/under power lines and using
cell phones close to the brain, not sure that the new schemes will
pass health/safety considerations.
Any startup with good design
and plausible plans for the future likely would be a good investment
-- if they were well managed and didn't over-extend themselves; the
"if" part is a really BIG one.

Stuff
Seekers, All:
DOWNEYites (and ex-) --
There is a LOT of new
residential houses in town. Nearly none of them are like what you and
I live(d) in; most of them are called "mansions";
ostensibly they are "single family residences", but many
have rather extended "families". Some folks say that the
crews are paid in cash as a way of laundering drug money. Some of the
houses are lived in for a while and then sold, generally it doesn't
seem like the two years needed for tax-saving purposes. At the moment
many appear to be idle in various construction phases, very few seem
to be in foreclosure, but that may change.
The large house on
Newville where the Richard and Karen Carpenter lived with their
parents and had their studio, was built on two lots and designed to
be separated into two houses. Recently the studio part was demolished
and a new mansion is well under construction. Some locals want to
force the owner of the other part to keep it as a historic item.
The
really large house on the s.w.cor. of Lesterford and Florence was
sold in 2003 for apx 1.5million and then TORN DOWN; that's $50 per
sq.ft. for an empty lot; only recently have they started construction
on something even LARGER.
Sadly, Downey Historical Society
Board-Member Paul Yokota (86) passed away in his sleep on Mon 17 Mar

not yet paid and then refers back to the same phone number. Just now
I got two checks from OfficeDepot totalling $30 and apologizing for
the failure of the vendor and essentially begging my continued
loyalty and patronage. The checks came with $20 worth of limited-use
coupons and $10 worth of GiftCards. Pretty darned Good-Will for a
retailer.

The tearing-down of
perfectly good houses, just to build something newer, never ceases to
amaze me, especially in the current R.E. market and economy.
Since
1986 there has been a really NICE house at 9600 Cord Ave. (s.e.cor.
at Gallatin Road) was built on the property formerly occupied by the
Rancho Santa Gertrudes Elementary School; it was 2495sq/ft w/
3br/2ba; its assessed val. was $224k-land + 355k-house. It has just
been TORN DOWN to build something newer. Joe Adragna (DUHS'52) lives

Fun Seekers, All:
We just returned from a cruise of the
Norwegian Fjords which included Spitzbergen (specifically going
ashore at Magdalene Fjord, Ny Alesund, and Longyearbyen). If you ever
consider such a trip, then be sure that it includes the latter three
spots; if it doesn't, then choose another itinerary. The scenery was
MAGnificent, but we'd recommend not booking with Costa Cruises,
unless you cannot find another cruise line with the desired itinerary
(which seemed to be the case this season).
We also visited Bergen,
Honningsvag, Nordkapp, Tromso, Olden, and Hellysvelt & Geringer
(including a bus trip between the two).
We missed some notable
spots like, Oslo, Trondheim, Hammerfest, Molde, Andalsnes; don't know
if we missed any worthwhile scenery.
Caution: if you might go, do
note that some of the best scenery is to be seen in these fjords as

it would be easy, but it's not.
Importing the document into a

are blank, and thus the data to the right would be placed in

Lots
of folks were enthralled with all of the numbers and other converging
stuff tossed about in Dan Brown's "Da Vinci Code".
Well,
here's another very simple situation: take your standard cube and add
up the number faces (6), corners (8), and edges (12).
Now compare
that total to the number of letters in the alphabet (26).
Is that
a mystical convergence or just a co-incidence? You be the judge.
It
is somebody's principle (maybe one of Lawrence Peter's colleagues)
that work tends to expand to consume all available time and budget.
Similarly, house building in the suburbs tends to expand whenever a
new highway comes near, eventually forcing the widening of the
highway and perhaps even the construction of toll-roads. And so, too,
is it with the InterNet that after simple text overloaded dial-up,
then came DSL, digital-cable, satellite, and fiber-optic service --
all of which took on exceeding usage for still images, video,
streams, movies on demand, etc., all to the point that some providers
are now considering charging according to usage, as seen at

Gotta figure that free-enterprise/capitalism
should afford everyone the same opportunity to succeed or to fail
with minimal interference.
But there needs to be some
consideration for what should happen when enterprises get soooo big
that their failure could cause a wide-spread domino impact.
As
banks are failing and being bought up by other bigger banks, then it
only makes those enterprises BIGGER and the impact of their potential
failure even WIDER-spread.
So maybe there should be some
regulation to prevent/control BIGNESS, ie. the size of the baskets in
which the nations' eggs are kept and/or at least keep the BIGGIES
under some prudent regulation.

help the GREATER the scrutiny.

Sometimes
when copying or scanning from a thin page which has been printed on
both sides, then the reverse side may show up in the finished image
-- even though it was NOT obvious when viewing the original. This is
due to the copier's light source's being reflected off the unit's
cover and can be mostly avoided by placing a black page immediately
behind the original -- thus avoiding the cover's acting as a source
of backlight.
Sometimes when copying or scanning, then
phantoms or ghosts may appear in the finished image. These may be due
to stray light or reflections from the unit's cover and can often
times be avoided by placing a black page large enough to cover the
entire scanner bed behind the original to avoid any stray light or
reflections from the unit's cover.

Am seeking help achieving a
goal relative to presentation/display of a -.TXT file via a
browser:::
GIVEN a simple -.TXT file as the test one stored at ...
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hthoskins/IMAGSET1/TSTTXT.TXT
which
WORDPAD and NOTEPAD display nicely folded and with its new-lines
(CR-LF's) all in place, as seen at ...
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hthoskins/IMAGSET1/TSTPAD.jpg
The
GOAL is to present this in a browser in the same NICE format. Have
tried several things with varying UN-good results ...
1.- If
it is opened by a browser, then it displays UN-folded, and the
new-lines are maintained, as seen at ...
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hthoskins/IMAGSET1/TSTTXT.jpg
which requires scrolling left-to-right and back and forth to read
it.
2.- If it is simply renamed to be -.HTM and opened in a
browser, then is displays folded, but the new-lines are
ignored, as seen at ...
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hthoskins/IMAGSET1/TSTHTM.jpg
which is a far cry for the original neat presentation.
3.- If
the html tag of <PRE> is added at the top and opened in a
browser, then it displays UN-folded, and the new-lines are
maintained, as seen at ...
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hthoskins/IMAGSET1/TSTPRE.jpg
which -- just like (1) above -- requires scrolling
left-to-right and back and forth to read it.
NONE of which achieve
the goal.
Know that <BR> tags can be added judiciously
to the -.TXT file, but then it looks strange in simple text editors
like WordPad or in other editors like MS-Word or WordPerfect or in
E-Mail applications.
Got to figure that there is some better way
to achieve the goal of getting a simple text file to be displayed in
a browser in the same nice (folded and new-line) format as it is
displayed by the text editor which created it.
Same is true for
text which might be highlight-copied from a browser image or
from an E-Mail message.
Thanks in advance for any advice and
thoughts as to other schemes, methods, parameters, etc.

An ex-co-worker gave me a lead to a really
neat HTML tag called TEXTAREA, as in ...
<textarea
wrap="hard" readonly rows=""
cols=""
style='font-family:sans-serif;font-size:medium;height:95%;Width:100%'
>
and it works wonders with plain text files to maintain
carriage control and wrap just like a simple text editor would.
To
see its impact, take a look at ...
http://mysite.verizon.net/dowhist/AVIA1of5.htm
and
then right click in the narrow space in the top or left margin and
select "View (Page) Source" -- with View|Wrap or
Format|WordWrap off as may be necessary.
Interestingly, browsers'
source viewers have a wrap OPTION, but the browsers themselves do
NOT.

the albums and pictures at a recent family reunion, reminded me to
continue to pass along advice for parents to take posed pictures of
themselves and the kids as singles, in pairs, and family together
(not necessarily professionally, but at least posed) at least every
year, and file them in a special place as documentation of the
family. If it can be done at home or in a park-like setting with a
digital camera against a nice background with a tripod, then a
gazillion images can be taken for free and just the best saved for
posterity. Possibly exchanging the favor with a neighbor could avoid
the self-timer and maybe even the tripod.

If
you intend to print any set of pages back-to-back, recommend that you
be sure to have an EVEN number of pages in the set (even if you have
to add an intentionally blank page at the end). Depending on the
printer or its setup/properties the pages may otherwise not be paired
as expected (ie, 1&2 may not be back-to-back, but rather 2&3),
which can really be awkward if the right-left margins (and/or page
numbers) were set to alternate to allow for binding.
