Running Compilation of Stuff

These are archived copies of the Periodic E-Mails entitled "Compendium of Stuff".
Rather than re-distribute ever piece of goodies that comes my way which would take a lot of time and space on the Net and possibly bore some, now I try to find each of them out there someplace on the giant WEB and include their URLs in these monthy messages so everyone can select those specific ones which sound like they might be of interest.
My apologies for the links' no-longer being hot (you'll need to copy & paste) and for the need to scroll to the right for any UN-folded text.

  Jan=01 Hello, All:

If you've been counting on your PC-created optical storage media for long term archival
retention, then you might find interesting insight at ...
   http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/index.php/id;1780671907;fp;2;fpid;1

For a perspective on remote controlled warfare, see the item at ...
   http://www.grunt.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=74865

For a long time, I've been using the "Local" option at ...
   http://www.google.com/
for maps and satellite/hybrid views, which gets to ...
   http://www.google.com/lochp
where you can put in addresses, etc. for maps and satellite views.

BUT have just learned from the son of a retired dentist friend that there is an ENTIRELY
different path to MUCH better resolution, via a program which can be downloaded from ...
   http://earth.google.com/
Best that I can tell so far, it does NOT provide maps to match, but it gives EXCELLENT HIGH-
RESOLUTION views, and can be driven either by address or by just zooming in/out and "Flying"
around the WHOLE WORLD.

Have NOT mastered all of its features but you can set it into motion, stop it, zoom in/out,
move top/bott/right/left, rotate the view, AND EVEN TILT it. Some features seem a wee bit
touchy: moving can cause the zoom to go IN withOUT its being requested.
You can save marker pins and email views to others via message attachments containing small
amounts of data (as long as the recipient has - or gets - the program); UNclear as to where
the pins are stored and whether they can be copied/emailed.

There are slight errors in the Lat-Long readings of the pointer/hand;
at coordinates (Deg:Min:sec) 51:28:40.0 N x 0:0:5.33 W
you will see the Royal Observatory at Greenwich which should be at 0:0:0 EW.

You can even see the parking lot lines, the word STOP at intersection limit lines, and the
size and color of the cars in the Driveway.!.!.!

Don't know how often that the scene is updated.
The stop sign at 6th and Downey Ave. here was just installed about 14 Dec'05, so we can look
every day to see when its "STOP" word shows up.

The object is to move the red block around without getting hit by the blue blocks or touching

the US Air Force uses this for fighter pilots. They are expected to go for at least 2
minutes. Give it a try!! Enjoy!

Lots of folks are concerned about Global Warming and alternative energy sources, but as I
vaguely recall from something in Thermodynamics, there's an intrinsic characteristic about
the entropy of the universe always increasing.
It's somehow tied to the fact that (nearly) every process creates heat, e.g., ...
 .. all engines
.. all tires on the road
 .. all automobile brakes
 .. all light bulbs
 .. all air-conditioners (especially)
 .. all human metabolism
So, if you'd like to help, then drive slower, brake less, squint in the dark, fan more, eat
less.
Also, as you might contemplate a hybrid automobile, then consider the energy required to
charge the batteries or to produce and distribute the hydrogen.
Solar may be the thing of the future; it's free and doesn't require production or
distribution.

For a wide variety of good photos, see at ...
    http://www.photographersgallery.com/

I have NOT checked all available hardware, but I've seen some excellent results of some super
scenic photos printed 8x10 on an Epson Stylus 200; current equiv is the 220. Some of your may
prefer Canon or HP, and maybe they're as good or better, but I'm just passing along an
observation. Generally, the best photo results are obtained by using Genuine mfgr's. ink AND
paper(glossy). There are also several distinctly different kinds of inks and dyes which give
better looking and longer lasting prints. Also having more and separate color cartridges will
likely give the better results. Toying with the print program's parameters also helps achieve
better results. But before you take the step into printing your own, take a CD with a few
good image files to several different commercial photo shops, e.g., Sammys, Ritz, Costco,
WalMart, Savon, etc. and see if they produce acceptable results -- either when you use their
kiosks or submit them to the staff. They may be cheaper and less of a hassle, but they do NOT
have the immediate gratification that some demand. Some shops also accept uploads over the
InterNet and will variously send the finished prints to your address or have them at their
local store for you to pickup; in the case of uploads, some of the printing work may be done
at the local store (likely faster) or at a centralized facility (likely slower), with the
latter possibly producing better quality; the options often have different names which do not
necessarily clearly indicate the quality or location, so make inquiry if you are interested.
Of, course with the larger shops it is a slot-in-the-door type of operation and you will not
have a chance to ask for a warmer/cooler/brighter outcome, which is why many purists use the
do-it-yourself process regardless of the hassle, time, or cost. Remember, too, that most
printer inks do dry up when not used for long periods, so you may need to replace some non-
cartridges if you don't do a lot of work; this problem may be relieved with color
lasers, but that's an entirely different area. It's always interesting to read the product
reviews at places like ...

The aerial views of these three are often from the same satellite

The actual resolution available varies from big cities to rural areas.
The Bird's Eye view in the latter source actually shows elevations
of structures when looking in the North, East, South, and West directions,
This feature is only available in the bigger cities and the 4 views were
taken at different times on different days.
As with the others, the viewed area can be shifted, but much more limited.

most of it is valid, but the part about signatures is a little over simplified: bank don't

that it takes 3 to carryout an identity theft: (1) a possibly careless victim, (2) the thief,
(3) a merchant who is so very eager to make a profit off of a legitimate sale that they do
not use due diligence in validating the real identity of their thief/customer.

1.- DO include enough of the original so that the reader knows to what you are replying.
2.- If practicable, intersperse your comments among the original text for greater reference

There has been some talk for many years about producing hydrogen from water and then reaping
energy by burning the gas, but the energy required to separate the hydrogen from the oxygen
was greater than the energy gained from burning the gas.
There has been a lot of talk recently about hydrogen powered cars, but one of the attendant
problems is producing and distributing the hydrogen; little has been said about the
efficiency or cost of the production process.
There have been some low-key developments lately which might make the concept viable. It
involves a "Very Unique Electrolysis Process". Draw your own conclusions after checking the
info at ...

Personally, I subscribe to the "no such thing as a free lunch" philosophy and therefore
remain very skeptical, because of the apparent "free" energy from this process.
If this does NOT work out, then it will be interesting to see if the oil/gas companies buy
up the patent rights and shelve the whole thing to maintain their monopoly and keep their
profits up. Advice: BUY Oil stocks.
If this DOES work out, then it would seem prudent for the trucking industry and fleet
vehicles to be the first to embark on its use, as they operate in more of a closed and
controlled environment than the general automobile-motoring public who are dependent on a
fuel's wide availability. Advice: SELL Oil stocks.

Preservation of historic works has long been a challenge of civilization. The finding of the
Rosetta Stone, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the daVinci Codex Leicester, and Archimedes palimpsest,
were all valuable because they could be read by the human eye -- albeit with varying degrees
of difficulty (the latter having been over-written). Today we are creating a plethora of text
and JPEG files onto magnetic and optical media. Tomorrow there will be two big questions left
for historians: (1) whether the media still be in-tact and readable by the original devices,
and (2) whether there be any similar devices (hardware and software) available to process
that media. If we fail to take proper steps, modern times could become known as the "Digital
Dark Ages".

As I understand it, the darn thing measures the how much oxygen is in the blood being
supplied to the cells AND how much oxygen the cells are taking out of it.
Really a good feat, especially considering that previous to this little device they used to
have to (painfully) take blood from an artery and analyze it in a lab.

Some say that it never helps to call things to the attention of others, but when the new
Jeopardy television season opened, they had changed some of the lights on the contestants'
lecterns. This change made if very difficult for those of us who are color blind to notice
who had won the buzz-in.

Hoping to get some relief, I found the name and address of the Executive Producer and wrote
him on Wednesday 20 Sept, expecting that maybe there might be some change after all of the
pre-recorded shows had been broadcast. To my surprise, by the very next Monday, I noticed
that a correction had been made, and on that Friday I got a return letter from him thanking
me.
So sometimes it does pay to call things to the attention of others.
Now if all such were just so easy.
